Part 2: Understanding the Cost of Attendance

Part 1 shared the importance creating a budget, and why it’s important. Now let’s take a look at the cost of attendance (COA), which at any college is the average cost to attend for one academic year. This cost will include tuition, fees, books, supplies, room and board, transportation, and personal expenses. These amounts are estimates, and will vary each year, as there are many components to consider.

Here is the COA for CSU Channel Islands:

Looking at the COA can be intimidating, and a bit overwhelming. At first glance, you and your family may be thinking, “how I am going to pay $28,840 to go to school, and live on campus?”

Something to consider is the real cost of going to school, versus the projected cost of going to school. Let us look at a student considering living on campus. Fixed cost is tuition and or fees to enroll in courses and housing fees to live on campus. You will pay this cost upfront in whole or through installment payment plans.

Let us look at what that cost would be for the upcoming academic year:

The cost to live on campus will vary per student, and depend on different factors. For example, depending about the number of occupants in a room, the village, as well as what meal plan you either select increases or decreases your overall cost to live on campus.

How much you pay in books per year will vary, how much you pay in transportation (including a parking permit or bus pass), will also vary.

Once you understand the real cost the better prepared you will be to move onto the next step. You will want to look at your personal spending choices, and evaluate the financial resources you have access to, which may include financial aid, savings account, job, etc. Create goals that allow you to set yourself up to have a successful academic year.

In part three, I will go over creating goals!
